Bruce Buffer won’t deny that Josh Hokit can handle business inside the octagon, but he doesn’t care for the outside shenanigans.
Hokit’s emergence in the UFC heavyweight appears to have MMA fans divided. Some believe Hokit’s over-the-top personality is overbearing, while others give “The Incredible Hok” credit for trying to spice things up in a weight class that needs a spark. For Buffer, a longtime UFC announcer, Hokit has taken things a bit too far.
Buffer was recently filmed speaking to a small group when Hokit’s name was mentioned. Buffer made it clear that he finds Hokit’s method of creating a buzz to be distasteful.
“He can fight, but I don’t like what he talks about,” Buffer said. “I think he’s disrespectful, and sorry, Josh if you’re watching, but it’s just the way it is. This is his thing. It’s his game. It’s not my style.”
Someone in the group joked that Buffer would be harboring dislike for Hokit during the UFC 334 main event introductions, but the legendary voice of UFC said that isn’t exactly the case. Still, Buffer didn’t appreciate Hokit calling Michelle Obama a “man” after his UFC Freedom 250 win over Derrick Lewis.
“Not quite like that,” Buffer said. “I just, you know, show some class. That’s the way I am. The things he said at the White House—I’m sorry I didn’t appreciate that.”
Buffer said that no matter how he feels about Hokit, his job at UFC 334 will be to ensure that the octagon introductions enhance the moment for both Hokit and his opponent.
“Not to put Josh down, but when I introduce him, you step in that octagon, man or woman; you’re putting your blood, sweat, and life on the line, and the tears on the floor, I’m there to enhance that moment for you,” Buffer said. “I give you my all.”
Hokit will be challenging Ciryl Gane for the heavyweight gold in the UFC 334 headliner. This will be Hokit’s first world title fight, and it’ll be held inside the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 14.
