October is a busy month at the movies, with video game action, a classic novel retold, a DC villain and a Halloween-season horror lineup. Here’s what’s opening in theaters this month.

Already playing

  • Verity: opened Friday, Oct. 2.
  • Other Mommy: opened Friday, Oct. 9.
  • Musk: the documentary opened Friday, Oct. 9.

Opening Friday, Oct. 16

  • Street Fighter: the arcade classic gets the big-screen treatment.
  • Sense and Sensibility: a new take on Jane Austen’s beloved story.
  • Whalefall: a new wide release.
  • You Can See Everything

Anime fans can also catch Spirited Away, back in theaters for a 25th-anniversary engagement starting Oct. 17.

Opening Friday, Oct. 23

  • Clayface: a DC horror sci-fi thriller about the shape-shifting Batman villain.
  • Ali G: Who Iz I?: Sacha Baron Cohen’s famous character is back.
  • Wildwood
  • Klara and the Sun

Opening Friday, Oct. 30

  • The Mongoose: an action thriller to close out the month.
  • Christmas at the Kringles: yes, the holiday movies are already here.

Make it a movie night

Opening weekends get crowded, especially for big franchise titles. Buy tickets early for Friday and Saturday nights, or try a weekday matinee for smaller crowds and lower prices. Many theaters run discount days, and premium formats sell out first. Bring the whole crew. October is made for scary movies, comfort movies and loud ones.

StarShot’s picks

Want a crowd-pleaser? Go with Street Fighter. For something darker, Clayface is right on time for Halloween. And if you’ve never seen Spirited Away on a big screen, don’t miss this chance.

Release dates can shift, and some titles open in limited release first, so check your local theater’s listings for showtimes.
