The boxing world is in mourning following the death of legendary Puerto Rican former world champion Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gómez at the age of 69, which occurred on the night of Saturday, October 10.

In recent days, there had been great concern regarding Gómez’s health after his son posted a message on social media last Wednesday asking for prayers; it was known that he was suffering from health issues and brain damage.

The legendary “Niño de las Monjas” (The Kid from Las Monjas) had been hospitalized for two weeks due to respiratory complications.

Born in San Juan on October 29, 1956, Gómez left a lasting boxing legacy by winning world titles in three weight classes—super bantamweight, featherweight, and super featherweight. His career began in Panama in 1974 and concluded in Florida in 1989, with a professional record of 44 wins, three losses, and one draw (including 42 knockouts) and a record of 17 consecutive knockout defenses of the WBC super bantamweight title.

He faced opponents such as Alberto Dávila, Dong Kyun Yum, Royal Kobayashi, Juan Antonio López, Leo Cruz, Carlos Zárate, Derrik Holmes, Salvador Sánchez, Juan Meza, Roberto Rubaldino, Lupe Pintor, Juan Laporte, Azumah Nelson, Rocky Lockridge, and Alfredo Layne, among others. Gómez represented Puerto Rico at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and in 1974, he won the gold medal at the inaugural World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Havana, Cuba.

His legacy gained international recognition when he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, in 1995.

With his world titles, impressive record, and dominance in the ring, “Bazooka” Gómez became an iconic figure in Puerto Rican and Latin American sports.

His legacy will endure in the memories of generations of fans who found, in his world championship fights, one of the most powerful expressions of the passion for boxing.
