One of Islam Makhachev’s biggest rivals believes Carlos Prates has a clear path to victory against the UFC welterweight champion.
UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is widely expected to face surging contender Carlos Prates for his next title defense. Makhachev vs. Prates is rumored to headline the UFC’s opening numbered card in 2027, tentatively set for January in Toronto.
Prates presents a plethora of challenges to Makhachev’s title reign. The top contender’s recent finishes against former champions Jack Della Maddalena and Leon Edwards make him a tall task for the reigning champion.
But Makhachev has dismantled several challenging opponents during his historic UFC career, including wins against the likes of Dustin Poirier and Alexander Volkanovski. Despite Makhachev’s resume, one of his biggest rivals believes Prates presents a unique puzzle.
Charles Oliveira: Carlos Prates has the ‘blueprint’ to dethrone Islam Makhachev
In a recent interview with Sherdog, BMF titleholder Charles Oliveira was asked to break down the Makhachev vs. Prates matchup.
“I think Garry showed Prates the blueprint,” Oliveira said of Makhachev vs. Prates.
“I usually say these matchups will be close, but this time, I believe Prates has a real chance to win. Beyond being a sniper, he possesses knockout power and is a black belt in jiu-jitsu. If he lands those kicks to the ribs and calves, just like Garry did, he could catch the champion off guard,” he continued.
“If Islam doesn’t secure a finish in the first or second round and Prates maintains the composure he’s shown in his recent fights, he has everything he needs to win.”
Oliveira isn’t the only UFC star who believes Prates will get the job done against Makhachev. UFC featherweight Jean Silva, Prates’ longtime teammate, expects him to earn a knockout victory.
