GTA 6 Gives Xbox Players and Unexpected Advantage Over PS5

Grand Theft Auto VI is gearing up to take players back to Vice City, but before anyone starts cruising through Leonida, there’s an unexpected catch for those planning to buy a boxed copy. And that catch gives Xbox players a massive advantage over PS5 gamers. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with performance, fps, graphics, or what console can make a car crash look more spectacular. It’s all about the download code itself.

PS5 GTA 6 Codes Are Region Locked

As stated on Rockstar’s official website, GTA 6’s boxed physical edition won’t actually include a game disc at all. Instead, buyers will receive a digital download code. PlayStation 5 codes, however, are restricted by region, meaning that the code must match the region associated with the buyer’s PlayStation account. Xbox codes, meanwhile, are not restricted by region at all.

In other words, Xbox players can purchase a code from anywhere in the world and redeem it without any of the regional restrictions that apply to PS5 codes. PlayStation players, on the other hand, need to pay close attention to where their copy comes from, or risk buying a code they can’t even use.

That could be devastating for excited GTA 6 players who want to dive into Vice City on launch. Imagine spending an arm and a leg on a code that’s basically useless to you. Importing games, hunting for regional deals while traveling, or buying copies of games online are all very common practices. For PS5 owners, though, that bargain could turn into a very expensive headache if the code sourced doesn’t match their account’s region.

In this case, Xbox players get a much more flexible and user-friendly experience, which makes buying their copy of GTA 6 far less stressful.

Let’s not get too carried away though. PS5’s region rules don’t mean GTA 6 will run better on Xbox, nor does it make every aspect of the Xbox version superior. At the end of the day, your experience with the actual game itself will be more or less the same; it’s only during the redeeming chapter where Xbox players have a real leg-up here.

Still, with a launch this massive, even a tiny inconvenience matters. And for a GTA 6 fan who suddenly finds themselves unable to redeem their $79.99 game, the inconvenience would feel anything but tiny. For PS5 owners, the moral of the story is to pay close attention to the region of your code before you buy, or consider shopping at local vendors to eliminate the risk of getting a code from another region.
