The Banff International String Quartet Festival (BISQFest) was founded in 2017, following the success of the triennial Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC).

This year’s BISQFest offered a weekend of concerts featuring laureates from the Banff Centre competitions alongside several acclaimed musicians and composers.

In partnership with BISQFest, the Violin Channel will livestream three concerts from this year’s event!

The first concert on October 16 will feature Schubert’s Death and the Maiden arranged for 22 String Players.

On October 22, tune in to hear Banff’s composer-in-residence Mark Applebaum‘s piece “More or Less” performed by Livia Sohn, alongside Beethoven’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59 No. 3 performed by Opus13.

Lastly, on October 29, audiences can enjoy Dvořák’s Terzetto in C Major, Bryars’ Harpsichord Quintet, Golijov’s Tintype Viola Quintet, and Ravel’s Kaddish.

“The competition runs every three years, and we wanted to have something that engaged the audience and created opportunities for all the laureates in the years between the actual competition,” Barry Shiffman told The Violin Channel.

“We have musicians that have joined us from all over North America and Europe, and an audience that is filling the hall,” he adds of this year’s festival. “It’s a really energized, wonderful environment.”

“We have more breadth of programming possible in a festival compared to in the String Quartet Competition,” he concludes. “We take full advantage of that and  present an extraordinary range of repertoire, so the audiences get inside the world of different creative voices.”
